Using collective memory in re-designing digital storytelling for cultural sites

Since September 2016, the City of Fermo is partner of the project "diSTORY" (Digital Stories of Small Historic towns) funded under the Creative Europe program, together with the Urban Development Center of Belgrade in Serbia, the citizens of Museums Radovijica and the Association of Historic cities of Slovenia.

The main goal of this project is to create "digital stories" through a collective learning process, drawing its inspiration from the tangible and intangible heritage of the city and involving both industry experts (cultural workers, artists, experts multimedia languages, eTCC ...) as well as non-experts (citizens, visitors, students, etc ...).

To this aim, first, we wish to invite all the local cultural actors: associations, students, citizens of Fermo, as well as visitors to participate in a great work of "re-generation" of the common memory, through research and the collection of materials related to the most important and representative Places and Persons of the City.

By sharing witnessing and documents (photographs, letters, etc ...) stored in our homes, in public or private archives, it will be possible to bring to light hidden "memories and treasures" and get to co-create a new citizen storytelling, usable and participated by all, thanks to the ability to use mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc ...) for sharing content.

This path will be followed by experts who will act as facilitators and collectors of stories and will lead to a twofold result:

  • Firstly, it will be created a web platform (common for all the partners) for sharing of materials collected in the different partner cities, which will allow, in addition to giving international visibility, to experiment new forms of collaboration between cultural operators and diverse audiences;
  • Secondly, in collaboration with artists and experts of multimedia languages and thanks to a special budget, a pilot "digital story" will be crafted and become part of the cultural itineraries of the town. This end product will serve as a model to be replicated on the same combination of technology and participation as part of a new strategy to enhance the cultural heritage of the City of Fermo.
